IWSG - Wednesday .... Finding Happiness

Today is the first Wednesday of the month when writers around the blogosphere come together for a virtual group hug. Hop over to the HQ to see other bloggers who are posting today. Click on the pic above to get there.

So last week Hubby and I spent in Banff, Canada to celebrate his 40th birthday. It was bliss. Such a beautiful place. All that fresh air and spectacular scenery is just what  I needed. I've been in kind of an "I suck" phase for awhile now. You know the one--where no matter how hard you try, everything you do just feels mediocre at best?

Being immersed in the grandeur of the Canadian Rockies reminded me how small and insignificant I am, but in a good way. A way that reminded me how trivial our problems are in the grand scheme of things. All my creative efforts felt so amateurish. As odd as that may sound, it was refreshing.

Having that time not to dwell on goals and work related efforts rejuvenated my spirit. On the way home, I began thinking of all the things I needed to do to get caught up, and I was starting to feel a little stressed. But there was one thing that made me feel really happy, and that was the upcoming arts and crafts market for PK's Pixies. I only had a day to prepare by the time I reached home, but instead of feeling stressed, I felt excited. I couldn't wait to get there and do my thing.

It was such a natural high that carried over right into market day and I had a fabulous day with good sales.

Why it's relevant to today's post, is that it made me realize how important it is to find what makes us happy. Work can't always make us happy, but we can find other things that do.

Writing makes most of us happy or we wouldn't do it. But when it comes to our stories, are we writing what makes us happy? Are we marketing our published works in a way that makes us happy? Are we happy with our publishing paths? Do the social media outlets we use make us happy?

If not, why? What can we do to change it?

I gotta say, that exhilarating rush of happiness I felt when I thought of market time is something I hadn't felt in a long time. That's my own fault for not paying closer attention to my spirit's whisper.

I'm not saying everything in life has to make us happy, but I am saying that if you haven't felt joy or happiness in your work in awhile, maybe it's time to rethink your path and goals, and determine how you can put yourself on the path to happiness.

Writing makes me very happy. There are parts of the publishing machine that don't, but that's the yin to the yang.

Bottom line, life is short. We shouldn't have to suffer through everything. We do the work that must be done so we can spend the rest of our time focusing on the things that makes us happy.

By the way, I happened to see Jamie Ayres has a post on being happy today too, so hop on over for a peek. She's a true gem!

And next month I'll be back to my Movie Breakdown for you on Silence of the Lambs. Hope to see you then!

Tell me, are you happy with your choices? Are there things you can be doing differently? What is it that makes YOU happy?

Glad your trip recharged you!
If there's no joy, it will show in everything we do. We need that happiness or we're either stressed or going through the motions.

Writing makes me happy -- except when it makes me miserable. I guess I've been stuck in the miserable stage for awhile because I'm waiting for word on things (which is like being in limbo) and I haven't found a new project that really excites me. Since I quit teaching, writing is my job. It's what I'm supposed to do every day.

But you make a good point. Creativity often springs from happiness, and maybe if I find something else that makes me happy, a writing project I love will come to me.

Kinda like I didn't find the love of my life until I was already in a happy place by myself. :)

One of the most beautiful places on the planet - the cover of my memoir was of Lake Louise. So glad you recharged. We all have to find what makes us happy in our lives and make every effort to do those things.

Banff and Jasper Parks are old friends... it's been too long since I've seen them. Some of the most beautiful landscapes in my country there.

Nature has a way of rejuvenating and healing us.

Great picture, sounds like a great time!

This post was timely for me. I just began blogging again. I wasn't happy doing it.
I still don't know if that's going to change but I owe it to myself to see.

The Canadian Rockies are such a soul/spirit invigorating place. Glad you could take sometime there and recharge.

That's awesome you did something special for your husband's 40th. You're right life is short and you have to do what makes you happy. After all my life transitions, I'm still discovering what makes me happy and how I want to live a fulfilling life. It's a normal part of the grief process.

Love that your trip for your husband brought you gifts too. Generous ones.

So pleased you enjoyed your break away. What an awe inspiring place. Banff has always been one of the places I will visit at some point. I really like your positive thinking PK. Wishing you a productive and happy November.

Nothing like a huge does of nature to help one find her place in the grand scheme of things.

Writing is one thing that takes me or distracts me from perpetual pain. It's like I am a different person.

I agree we need to be aware of the stuff that makes us happy. I also want to add that it's also important to surround ourselves with people who make us happy as well.

Glad you enjoyed your trip! I too enjoy being around nature,

I love moments of clarity like this. The best part is that we must be open to them and you were. :)

Gorgeous pic! Looks like a wonderful trip. I adore traveling. Going to Ashville, NC in a couple weeks for hiking and the Biltmore.

I am SO with you on being in touch with happiness! Life really should be about being happy whenever we can. So yes, seek it, change things up, find that vibe!

Love your pep talk. You are right...writing makes me happy. I need to guard that and keep it true despite all the other things about the business that can be stressful. :0 said...

Gah! The whole time I'm reading your blog, I'm thinking, we're going through the same thing! Then I read your shout out! You're too sweet for words. ThANK YOU :-) Where was the craft fair? Ever make it down this way to Naples, Fort Myers, Cape Coral?? Hope to see you again one of these days, and some pixies <3

I was in a forum of authors talking about the process of marketing a new novel and someone said, "Focus on the things you enjoy doing and forget the rest." I think that works for marketing...but there are still parts of writing/publishing you'll have to do. Editing, revisions, etc...many of us hate that stuff but we have to do it. Your advice is great for that. Get through it, then move on to the parts we DO enjoy.

It's true. I actually decided years ago to focus on doing things that make me happy, and the interesting thing is that doing so made me much better at dealing with things that don't.

I was just thinking it's been a LONG time since I heard from you. Thus the stop. I hope you're doing well. Hope the craziness of life hasn't bowled you under.

Lots of good things here. I like to think of how big the universe is and how small I am to remind myself that my problems aren't that big of a deal, it's a stress relief really. Also, finding ways to make yourself happy in your goals is really important and easy to lose sight of. Great post.
